Down Syndrome Awareness Month: Alyssa Bohn
Miss Wisconsin 2019, Alyssa Bohm in honor of Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
“The Miss America foundation scholarships have provided me with scholastic and social initiative opportunities. It has helped me to expand my social initiative “Embracing Special Needs, Building Inclusive Communities” and pursue my career of becoming a Special Education teacher. Ever since I started competing over 7 years ago my main focus and goal was to enhance the lives of those with disabilities which is inspired by my Aunt Cindy who has an intellectual disability. I was able to co-create various programs, start a football camp for Special Olympics athletes, join the board of directors for Special Olympics WI and become an ambassador for the Unified Champion Schools Program through Special Olympics as Miss Wisconsin 2019.
“All of these successes are connected to my involvement in the Miss America Organization. My work with people with disabilities inspired me to pursue a career in special education and the Miss America Foundation helped to make that career goal a reality by providing financial assistance along the way. I continue to advocate for people with disabilities as a teacher and Special Olympics WI board member, while also educating young women about the Miss America Organization and the scholarship opportunities that lie ahead.”
